Rod Holders

Rod Holders for Walleye Trolling

A rod holder setup starts with how you fish. Tube-style holders are the workhorses for trolling: they hold the rod securely, let you set lines fast, and free the rod quickly when a fish hits. Trees mount three or four holders on a single mast and are the standard choice for running several planer board lines off one side of the boat. Track-mounted systems from Traxstech and Cisco slide anywhere along an aluminum track, so you can reconfigure the spread as conditions change, while rail and gimbal mounts fit boats that don't run tracks.

Two things separate a good setup from a frustrating one. First, tube depth and angle: long trolling rods need tubes deep enough that the reel clears the gunwale. Second, how the holder releases — ratcheting holders lift the rod straight up into your hand instead of pulling it back against a loaded board or diver. For dipsey diver and downrigger work, look for holders with positive locking adjustment that won't creep under constant load.

The brands in this category each take a different approach. Traxstech and Cisco build the track-based systems behind most serious walleye trolling spreads. Lee's Tackle and C.E. Smith are the flush-mount standards — stainless holders set into the gunwale. Tigress covers the premium end, Mate Series combines a rod holder and cup holder in a single flush mount, and Scotty covers freshwater boats and downrigger setups.
